New website launched: Church Health Center

Church Health Center is an incredible organization in the Memphis community and has been partnering with Speak for quite a while now, so when it came time to refresh their look on the web, they turned to us to redesign the website from the ground up. The new website provides a very clean, compelling look that maximizes the visual impact of the content. The main navigation was cleaned up to be easily understood and updatable by CHC as needed. SiteWrench widgets are used in the footer of the site to bring upcoming events and email signup capabilities to every page of the website.

Overall, CHC received a fresh, dynamic look that molds to its organizational and communication goals. We're pumped about the new website's launch! What are you waiting for? Check it out for yourself!

We make IT look good: Service Assurance

For the Service Assurance website, Speak was challenged with bringing personality and intriguing design to a company in an industry that is normally associated with... well... the lack of personality and intriguing design. Maybe we're biased (okay, we're totally biased), but we're pretty sure this is one of the best looking websites for an IT firm that's ever been created. Go check it out for yourself!

It's a scouting extravaganza!

At Speak, we're all about being prepared, empowering young people, campouts with nothing but Spam on the menu and, of course, rope courses. It goes without saying then that we were practical shoe-ins to get both the Girl Scouts Heart of the South and the Boy Scouts of America, Chickasaw Council websites.

Both websites launched over the weekend, so be sure to go check them out for yourself (and if you happen to talk to any of the folks at GSHS or BSA, would you remind them that we still haven't gotten our computer merit badge?).

Speak's mobile website designs

It's no secret that mobile device usage is kind of a big deal (just check out Apple's latest revenue reports which are carried mostly on the strength of its iPhone, iPad and iPod devices). As a result, we've been getting more and more requests to design and implement mobile websites for our clients. Below are just a few that we've put out recently with lots more on the way. Think your website could benefit from having a mobile specific reach? Give us a shout, and let's put together a plan for taking advantage of your mobile traffic.

Idlewild Presbyterian Church

Idlewild Presbyterian Church is a landmark church in the Memphis community, and Speak was honored when we were invited to participate in the bidding process to redesign its website. We were even more excited when after interviewing several firms, Idlewild chose Speak to handle its website design and content management implementation with SiteWrench.

Idlewild is famous for its architecture, so featuring elements of the building through photography was one of the core design elements as we moved through the design process. However, even more important to the ministry of Idlewild is its people. This diverse congregation focuses on community service and intellectual debate and discussion. In fact, the tagline that is featured throughout the website, "A place where questions are as important as answers" embodies the focus on welcoming all comers regardless of skepticism or struggles of unbelief. Combining the missions of Idlewild to be highly involved with the community and welcoming of anyone who comes in the door provides a powerful visual draw to gather more information about the church.

Along with strongly communicating the ideals that Idlewild is based upon, the church also wanted to provide highlight important access points to the information on its website. The main navigation is built using a dynamic dropdown system (as pages are added, removed or moved within the site architecture, the dropdown navigation automatically updates), and the footer of every page on the site has elements pointing site visitors directly to information they might be interested in. Idlewild has direct control to update the areas in the footer, and the Upcoming Events area automatically pulls in the next four events from the calendar built in SiteWrench.

By combining great design with a highly functional content management system like SiteWrench, Speak has delivered a website that looks great and easy to manage. Want to see more of the Idlewild site? Check it out here!

St. Jude Classic

St. Jude Classic website designed by SPEAK! Creative

In late 2009, the St. Jude Classic put out a notice that it was taking bids on redesigning its website for the upcoming years. The request for a bid made it quite clear that SJC expected a lot out of the design and interactivity of the website, and the request made it obvious that a highly functional content management system would be needed to manage and update the many parts and pieces of the website.

The new design features a wonderful organization of information with all elements (images, interactive elements and copy) building excitement for the upcoming tournament. From Flickr™ Photostream integration to social media highlight areas (Twitter® and Facebook®) to live PGA Tour stats and rankings, visitors to the new website have many different ways to interact with the tournament and its governing body. Behind the scenes, SiteWrench is doing the heavy lifting for content management.

In the end, we couldn’t be happier with the results, and we think the best way to see the results is to visit the new website and see for yourself. While you're there, be sure to pick up some tickets for the tournament and follow SJC on Twitter!

Getting Started: To-dos before your website project

"What do we need to do to get started?" It's one of the most frequent questions I get asked, and it's definitely one of the best questions I get asked. First of all, it means we're going to be doing business together. Second of all, it lets me lay a good foundation for our design and project management teams to be successful from the very beginning of the design process.

So, I thought it might be nice to provide a list of to-dos before starting your website project with us (or with anyone, really). Of course, there are specifics to each organization that get discussed on an individual basis, but here are some good general guidelines (think of something we left out? Let us know in the comments section below!).

Decide who will be responsible for making design decisions

This one sounds like a no-brainer, and for most organizations, it is! This doesn't mean you can't have a team or committee in charge of overseeing the project and making design recommendations. It simply means that you've got a gameplan for who will review the proofs and who will give feedback on the design. Deciding this up-front will keep you from missing valuable input during the Discovery stages of the process.

Track down your (vector) logo files

This comes highly recommended. When your organization had its logo designed, it's very likely that the logo was delivered in a vector file format (most commonly .ai or .eps). Tracking down your logo file in its original vector format will make your creative team's day (we'll probably send you cupcakes) because we won't have to work with a rasterized file format that can pixelate or distort. Of course, if all you can find is a .jpg file, we're more than capable of making it work! Don't have a logo (or not happy with your logo)? Let us know. We'd be happy to put together some concepts for you.

Plan your content

I know, I know... this smells suspiciously like homework, but you'll be glad you took the time on the front-end to have your content updated and planned out. Completing all of your content is not absolutely necessary to get the website started, but it's highly recommended that you have at least started the process. As we develop your website, we'll provide and discuss a new sitemap, but we find many of our clients are so eager to get the website design completed, that they've neglected to polish or update their content (even though we've been reminding them to do so). Once the design is ready to launch, they're caught with several days/weeks of content updates that delay the launch of their incredible new website. As a side note: do you have a team working to write/update content? You might consider signing up for a free or cheap project management system account (Basecamp, for example) for your team to collaborate on content.

Think about your photos

Many websites feature photos (how profound - just bear with me). Do you have photos that you would like for us to use? If so, go ahead and begin gathering them. Do your photos have pictures of people in them? If so, make sure you have photo release forms from the folks in the pictures (when you send photos our way, we assume that you've taken care of this step). Please also note, pictures of minors require a photo release form signed by a parent/guardian. Do you need photos taken? Let us know, and we can probably recommend a photographer in your area. If necessary, we have access to extensive stock photo libraries as well.

None of the ideas above are so profound that you would have never thought of them on your own, but if you can check a few of these items off your list as you are getting started with a new website design, your design team will love you for being so well prepared. As I said before, I'm sure there are other items that could go on this list, so feel free to add your suggestions in the comments below!

Tipton County

Tipton County recently launched its completely redesigned website from SPEAK!. The new site was designed to bring specific attention to the County Executive's initiatives as well as provide helpful information with regards to the many different departments within the county government. The school and industry highlight sections give Tipton Co. the ability to regularly showcase the many benefits of living and working in the county.

While SiteWrench is very often an excellent fit for many content management needs, the Tipton Co. website is testimony to the fact that we can deliver for any specific content management need. One of the requirements for the Tipton Co. website job was that the site must be delivered in a format that did not require the county to migrate to a new content management system, so we developed a great-looking new website that could be implemented within the content management parameters given to us.

We're extremely pleased with the results, but more importantly – so is our client.

"We wanted a site which would outline the strengths of Tipton County, offer as much information as possible, and provide a dynamic look. Our goal is to inform and educate the public and we believe this site accomplishes that with style."

Hope Church

Hope Church has been a SPEAK! client for many years, so when it came time to redesign its website, we were pumped at the opportunity to once again work with this well-known Memphis church.

Hope is always reaching out to the Memphis community with relevant events. Guests range from well-known authors to Christian musicians to dynamic speakers and everywhere in-between, so the new website design needed to afford Hope a great way to show off their upcoming events. SPEAK! designed and built a jQuery image rotation that ties to the event area on the home page. This area creates a "can't miss" visual element focused entirely around Hope's outreach strategy, and since it's built in jQuery rather than Flash, the website stays mobile-device friendly!

SPEAK! also created a "Visit Hope" area to contain information categorized specifically for those who would like to visit Hope Church for the first time. This area is similar to other church websites that employ a slide-down "Ministry Index." However, Hope and SPEAK! felt like the idea could be further developed to connect with a specific audience, so we pushed it further! With great results.

Social media is another area that many churches are paying close attention to (and rightly so!). Of course, we can integrate your Twitter® feed or Facebook® fan app on your website, but depending on your organization, those tools may not be the best fit for your web communication strategy! At SPEAK!, we help you think through your entire web strategy (including social media) and determine the best way to get your message across to your many different audiences.

With Hope, we decided that an obvious but more elegant approach (when compared to the feed and app integration mentioned above) would provide the best mesh-point between website design and social media integration. This way, a visitor to Hope's website sees not only how to find Hope on Twitter® and Facebook® but also how to receive eNewsletter and RSS updates and where to go to see Hope's videos on YouTube®.

Boys and Girls Club of Greater Memphis

SPEAK! is proud to announce the launch of another website - this time for the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Memphis! If you keep up with us, you know that we love working with non-profit organizations in Memphis, and this was certainly no exception!

The BGCM website was developed as part of a larger marketing campaign that will begin to roll out early 2010, and we could not be happier with the end result of the website design. It can be challenging for a non-profit to encourage involvement from the community without playing "tearjerker" statistics or stories, but SPEAK! and BGCM set out to create a website that set aside the negative emotions.

The new website creates an uplifting presence for the organization, focusing on the positive effects that BGCM has on the lives of the children involved in its programs. It was also a goal for the website to feel extremely kid-friendly without alienating a largely adult website audience. As you can see, the bright colors and hand-drawn illustrations provide just such an environment while still communicating a strong call to action for involvement.

The BGCM website uses SiteWrench as its content management system, so in addition to being able to make on-the-fly content changes, BGCM can create database-backed registration forms, dynamic event calendars and much more. The new site will serve as a great centerpiece for the upcoming marketing campaign and provide a platform for BGCM to continue to tell stories of life-change.

Beeson Divinity School

Last week, Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, AL, took its newly designed website live. The new site is a place for the many different audiences of Beeson to come to get the information they are looking for quickly. As a visitor navigates through the website, it becomes clear very quickly that this is not simply an online brochure. The site has several hundred pages of information that have been developed with the Beeson audiences in mind. With so much information, it became very important that SPEAK! and Beeson develop an intuitive, dynamic navigational structure.

As a result, the main navigation and utility links on the home page provide incredibly quick access to all of the major entry points for the different website audiences. This is accomplished while maintaining a clean, elegant home page design that gives way to a robust, flexible design as the visitor moves from one sub page to the next.

Beeson's new website was built into SiteWrench, giving the school control over all of its content while also providing dynamic tools like the calendar widget (located on all sub pages beneath the sub navigation), chapel service archives, photo galleries and more. Overall, the new Beeson website has been a huge step forward in design and functionality for the school, and we're excited to see the new website live!

Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum

The Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum has launched its brand new website designed by SPEAK! Creative with content management provided by SiteWrench. The new website design blends textural elements that evoke a sense of nostalgia and history with a clean and clearly defined content presentation. The overall look is the perfect fit for this landmark Memphis museum, and the SPEAK! team couldn't be happier to see this site launched!

A quick tour of the home page gives you an idea of everything that is going on at the museum, and interactive elements (automatic blog update, shop for merch online, live videos, links to social media and a dynamic event calendar) engages the website audience with a wide array of features for those of all ages and interests. By using SiteWrench to keep its site up to date, the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum is able to provide all of these different features through one CMS.

Woodlands Wellness Launched

The Woodlands Wellness and Cosmetic Center website was in desperate need of a facelift (pun completely intended). The Center wanted a way to feature its renowned doctors, services and products in a way that built confidence and feelings of comfort and personal service. This medi-spa has a full range of services, both aesthetic and wellness related, that were just getting lost in the jumble of its old site, so the SPEAK! team had quite a challenge facing them with the new site.

SPEAK! built an intuitive, easy to understand navigation that clearly breaks down the different services and products that the Woodlands Wellness and Cosmetic Center offers. The soft color palette with complementary jewel tones was designed to feel comfortable while also appealing to the Center's most common client: women. A personal note from Drs. Davis is featured on the home page along with accolades and success stories. Each of these elements were put in place to build a complete picture of who does/can trust the Woodlands Wellness and Cosmetic Center. Overall, we couldn't be more excited to see this new site up and running!

Reinvent Government site launched!

Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton has a vision for Memphis and Shelby County that will reduce government waste and provide a single answerable entity for the governing of Memphis and Shelby County. As part of his strategy to create dialogue between all of the parties involved, Mayor Wharton asked SPEAK! to create a website that would provide many resources and give website visitors the opportunity to sound off. All of this needed to be achieved without confusion or clutter.

The resulting website is clean, easy to navigate and provides the information and interaction that Mayor Wharton knows is key for this proposition to move forward. Backed by his 90 day listening tour throughout the county, this website will be a critical part of the Memphis and Shelby County government consolidation discussion.

Christ Church launches its redesigned site!

One of Memphis' most recognizable churches, Christ Church United Methodist, launched its newly redesigned site last week. Christ Church has worked with SPEAK! for several years now, and its latest website redesign is representative of the level of collaboration that exists between SPEAK! and each of our clients. Christ Church wanted a website that was cleanly presented but that also presented information to all of its audiences on the home page. These seemingly disparate ideas were melded into a fantastic new website design that is rich in information without being overwhelming in the least.

The Flash presentation on the home page clearly ties in Christ Church's model for spiritual growth, the dropdown navigation presented on the site is a new take on a very familiar site function and the Christ College shell creates a distinct look for this key ministry of Christ Church. All-in-all, the new website takes advantage of the latest in website design and the latest in functionality from our ever expanding CMS, SiteWrench 4.0.

UPDATE: It looks like others are digging the new design for Christ Church - Church Beauty just listed the site!

New Memphis in May Site Launched!

If you live in the Southeast, or if you keep up with Food Network, odds are good that you've heard of Memphis in May. Memphis in May is best known for its incredible Beale Street Music Festival (millions of visitors flock to the site within hours of the participating bands being announced) and the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest (pretty much the holy grail of barbecue). And well... that was the problem that Memphis in May presented to SPEAK!. You see, Memphis in May is a month long series of programs and events, and while the music and barbecue events are by far the most well attended, Memphis in May wants to bring attention to all of the activities that go on throughout the month. So SPEAK! was faced with a unique challenge: build an easy to navigate site that gives equal exposure to all of the different events/programs of Memphis in May while doing nothing to take away the importance of the music and barbecue events. A pretty tall order by any standards. The new website addresses all of the clients desires with an incredibly logical navigation structure that clearly communicates that Memphis in May is much more than just music and barbecue. The site itself gives Memphis in May the opportunity to express much more personality than its previous website, and we've given Memphis in May maximum editability of its site by building the large photo banners on each shell to be updatable by the client. We even increased Memphis in May's ability to bring in ad revenue by building in more available ad space than its previous website. At SPEAK!, we're incredibly excited to see the launch of this new website. Memphis in May is a cornerstone of what makes Memphis great, and we're very proud to be playing such an important role in its continued success.
